In March this year, nearly 75 years after World War II came to an end, the Vatican finally opened its war archives. As their contents are being studied, findings will surely shed light on the controversy that this timely documentary examines: the Catholic Church’s response (or rather lack of) to the Holocaust. Whilst Pope Pius XI denounced Nazism and its treatment of Jews unequivocally, his successor Pope Pius XII chose to remain silent – a silence that cost the lives of thousands of innocent people and challenged fundamental Catholic values. Featuring Oscar-nominated actor David Strathairn (The Debt) as the voice of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Holy Silence exposes the intricate relationship between diplomacy, politics and religion and the heavy price of neutrality.
