Tall and talented, Aulcie Perry’s success as a huge NBA star seemed almost certain in the mid 1970s. But when the New York Knicks decided not to hire him after all, the American basketball player found himself in Israel instead, winning two European championships with his new club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, dating the country’s most famous top model and becoming an iconic figure. Forty years after his glory days with Maccabi, Perry looks back on a life that has taken him from the peak of fame in Israel to being locked behind bars in the US for drug trafficking offences, and back to his adoptive country, where he is now a bona fide – if still unlikely – national treasure.
