Fleeing his native Austria as a child in the 1930s, Georges Jorisch had few memories of the house he used to live in. Almost seven decades later, he embarked on a near impossible mission to locate and retrieve the works of art that had decorated the grand family estate and were stolen – like his childhood – by the Nazis. Directed by his granddaughter, The Heir is both a lovely tribute to Jorisch who passed away in 2012 and a fascinating study of Nazi looted art.
Rhoda Wise has fulfilled all that has ever been expected of her. At 75 she looks back, and, speaking candidly to her daughter, tells about the quiet despair lying beneath her normative Jewish family life.
